Sonamarg, literally meaning “Meadow of Gold”, is a picturesque hill station located in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It sits at an altitude of approximately 2,730 meters (8,960 feet) above sea level and is about 80 km northeast of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

Sonamarg has a subalpine climate:

  • Summer (May–September): Pleasant weather with temperatures ranging between 10°C and 25°C.
  • Winter (October–April): Extremely cold with heavy snowfall. The area often remains inaccessible during peak winter due to blocked roads.

🧭 Key Attractions in and Around Sonamarg

1. Thajiwas Glacier

  • One of the most famous tourist spots in Sonamarg.
  • Located just 3 km from the main town, it is accessible via pony rides or short treks.
  • A spectacular place for snow activities, sledging, and photography, even during summer.

2. Zero Point / Zoji La Pass

  • Located around 25 km from Sonamarg.
  • At an altitude of about 3,528 meters, Zoji La is a high mountain pass connecting Kashmir Valley to Ladakh.
  • Known for its thrilling drive and snow-covered landscape, even in late spring.

3. Baltal Valley

  • Situated about 15 km north of Sonamarg.
  • Serves as a base camp for the Amarnath Yatra, a major Hindu pilgrimage.
  • Offers camping and a base for trekkers heading to the Amarnath Cave Shrine.

🚗 How to Reach Sonamarg

  • By Road: From Srinagar, it’s a scenic 2.5-hour drive via NH-1D. The road remains open from April to November.
  • By Air: The nearest airport is Srinagar International Airport, around 85 km away.
  • By Rail: Nearest railway station is in Srinagar, but the Jammu Tawi railway station (around 330 km away) is more connected to the rest of India.

🧭 Best Time to Visit

November to April: Mostly inaccessible due to heavy snow. Adventurous travelers with snow-vehicles may attempt it in early winter.

May to September: Best time for sightseeing, treks, and enjoying the lush green meadows.

July–August: Pilgrimage season for Amarnath Yatra (via Baltal).

Day 01 :
Arrival in Srinagar
  • Morning:
    • Arrive at Srinagar Airport (Sheikh Ul Alam International Airport).
    • Transfer to your hotel or houseboat accommodation in Srinagar.
    • Check-in and relax after your journey.
  • Afternoon:
    • Shikara Ride on Dal Lake: After settling in, head to Dal Lake for a relaxing shikara ride. Explore the floating gardens and local markets on the lake.
    • Visit the Mughal Gardens: Visit Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, which are famous Mughal gardens near Dal Lake.
  • Evening:
    • Stroll through Lal Chowk, Srinagar’s bustling market area, for local handicrafts and souvenirs.
    • Enjoy a traditional Kashmiri dinner (Wazwan) at a local restaurant or your hotel.

Day 02 :
Srinagar to Keran Valley (Travel Day)
  • Morning:
    • After breakfast, drive from Srinagar to Keran Valley. The distance is around 150 km and the journey will take about 5-6 hours, depending on road conditions.
    • Along the way, enjoy the scenic drive, passing through Kupwara and picturesque villages.
  • Afternoon:
    • Arrive in Keran Valley and check-in at your accommodation (guesthouse or homestay).
    • Have lunch and take some rest to recover from the long drive.
  • Evening:
    • Take a short walk through the valley and along the banks of the Kishanganga River. Enjoy the peaceful ambiance and the natural surroundings.
  • Overnight: Stay in Keran Valley.
Day 03 :
Explore Keran Valley

Morning:

  • After breakfast, take a guided nature walk around the valley. Explore the lush green meadows, traditional wooden houses, and picturesque landscapes.
  • Visit Sharda Temple (across the LOC), which is a significant historical and religious site. The temple ruins can be seen from Keran and are of great interest to history enthusiasts.

Afternoon:

  • Enjoy a picnic lunch by the river or a traditional Kashmiri meal at your guesthouse.
  • Post-lunch, visit the nearby local villages. Interact with locals to learn about their way of life and the unique culture of the region.

Evening:

  • Take a sunset view at one of the scenic spots along the Kishanganga River.

Day 04 :
Trekking and Wildlife Exploration

Morning:

  • Start early with a trek or nature walk through the valley’s forested trails. Explore the surrounding meadows, which offer panoramic views of the snow-capped mountains and the river.
  • Consider a moderate trek to nearby high-altitude meadows for a close-up of the mountains and valley views.

Afternoon:

Day 05 :
Return to Srinagar
  • Morning:
    • After breakfast, check out from your accommodation in Keran and begin your drive back to Srinagar.
    • On the way, enjoy the beautiful landscapes once again as you pass through Kupwara and nearby villages.
  • Afternoon:
    • Arrive in Srinagar by early afternoon. Depending on your departure time, you can do some last-minute shopping at Lal Chowk or visit other local spots such as Hazratbal Shrine or Shankaracharya Temple.
  • Evening:
    • Transfer to Srinagar Airport for your flight back home.
